The Heckler & Koch MP5 (From Maschinenpistole 5 - German: "machine pistol model 5") is a 9mm submachine gun of German design, developed in the 1960s by a team of engineers from the German small arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch GmbH (H&K) of Oberndorf am Neckar.
It is currently used by the armed forces and law enforcement units of over 40 countries[citation needed]. The MP5 remains one of the most widely deployed of all current submachine guns[citation needed] and has been developed into a family with numerous variants.
In the 1990s, Heckler & Koch developed the Heckler & Koch UMP, the MP5's successor, though both remain in production.[2]
